Silver in the Swamp

Silver Maples like wet feet and thus often grow in swamp forests. Their leaves are the most deeply indented of our maples, and show silver-white when flipped over by the wind. Be aware, however, that Silver Maple regularly hybridizes with Red Maple, producing hybrids with leaves intermediate in shape between the two parents.  Silver Maple has weak wood, with larger branches commonly breaking off, resulting in cavities that provide dens for Raccoons and Flying Squirrels, and nest sites for Wood Ducks, Eastern Screech-Owls and Barred Owls.
