In the Woods of the Nopiming

This trail meanders through the Nopiming Game Sanctuary, one of the few Crown Game Sanctuaries on private land in Ontario. To protect a colony of near-endangered Beavers Macnamara discovered near here, he lobbied the landowners to make their land a game preserve, which it was in 1920 by a Provincial Order in Council. Macnamara named the preserve “Nopiming,” Ojibway for “in the woods,” a phrase from “No-pi-ming endad ondji ja-wen-imid,” which translates to “the dweller in the woods is aways happy.”
