Diversity Before Adversity

Here, you will see a mixture of trees including deciduous species such as Sugar Maple and White Birch and a few coniferous trees such as Balsam Fir.  This indicates that the forest is relatively young.  Fir and birch cannot grow in deep shade and thus they got started here when the forest was opened up, likely by logging. But they cannot replace themselves due to the shade they create so once they die the diversity here will decrease.
