2016 Banquet and Silent Auction

Macnamara Banquet 2016: The Monarch Butterfly, a labour of loveThose who have attended previous Macnamara Field Naturalists’ Club Banquets know you get generous servings of great food AND fun.

Don’t wait to get your tickets for our 2016 event, which will be held on Saturday, November 12 at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Association Hall, 100 Clifford Campbell Drive, Fitzroy Harbour.

Our featured speaker will be Jean Lauriault speaking on The Monarch Butterfly: A Labour of Love.

In the insect world, the Monarch Butterfly is the world’s greatest traveller. When autumn arrives, fragile-looking Monarchs from Eastern Canada begin a Herculean journey of over 4,000 kilometres to mountains northwest of Mexico City, covering more than 100 kilometres in a single day.

And for some 20 years, retired Canadian Museum of Nature Associate Jean Lauriault, a specialist in the Monarch Butterfly, has migrated there with them.

Tens of millions of Monarchs were known to hibernate in Mexico his first winters there. But the overwintering population has since plummeted.  In the last 20 years, it’s reported that North America has lost 90% of the Monarch butterfly population.

Lauriault’s close study of all aspects of Monarch life and death, has impassioned him to its need for our protection and conservation. It begins with our understanding, something he has been working hard to improve.

As the featured speaker at our upcoming banquet, Lauriault will be shining a loving light on all things Monarch.

And what would the Club banquet be without our ever-popular banquet quiz, silent auction and door prizes!

Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. and dinner (roast beef and homemade side dishes with pie, etc., and vegetarian lasagna for non-meat eaters.) is at 6:00 pm.

And don’t forget—all net proceeds from the banquet go toward the expansion of the Macnamara Trail and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Sounds like a terrific evening doesn’t it! Ticket price at $35 per person applies up to midnight, November 8.  Payment MUST be RECEIVED by the Club by that date. Tickets for children 11 and under are available at a special price of $20. Tickets WILL NOT be available at the door.
